Broken Water

Album: Whet LP
Genre: Shoegaze, Garage, Post-Punk
Release: 2010
Label: Night People

Hailing from Olympia, Washington, Broken Water released their debut LP this year on Night People. Whet is a pretty easy listen if you’re into shoegaze. Nothing two genre bending here, though they do have what I think is some sort of woodwind on a track or two. They do go from sounding a bit dirgey, doom droney, to sounding super shoegazey. The album is a nice balance of volume, bliss, heaviness, and of course nostalgia. For all the grungey people who listen to shoegaze this band is worth a shot, shockingly enough every track sounds different. Hard blissed out garage, with both female and male vocals. *

Album: New Rituals
Genre: Psych, Garage, Blues
Release: 2010
Label: Alive

Mondo Drag released their debut album at the start of this year, and they’ve been one of the only bands I keep returning to. They’ve been around for awhile, surviving some name changes. New Rituals is what seems to be a partial re-release of their previous unreleased album, Holy Spirit. Their sound is dark and heavy, constantly revolving, on a multidimensional zip line of varying velocities, enormous and engaging drones, mixed with quick spurts of punk/garage rock breaks. They incorporate flows with massive energy, and contrast them with intense variety. Mostly, they sound like a loud band. A loud psychedelic drone, blues rock band that can get loud and still maintain balance. The album’s dynamic is so fluid it is almost thoughtless and completely hypnotizing. At times the vocals are little off and if you don’t like this kind of music then you might find their songs to be too similar, but I’m sure seeing them live would be more than worth it, which is all the reason to post it.

The Black Keys

Album: Brothers
Who: Dan Auerbach, Patrick Carney
Released: 5/18/10
Label: Nonesuch Records

Here is the album stream for The Black Keys‘ sixth album, “Brothers”, out in May. It sounds a lot less like murder to me than their first albums, but this isn’t shocking considering their last two albums.  The second half of the album, being a lot different than the first half as well. The new back-up vocals are a little strange, and same for the beats or scattered electronics. The drums are a lot lighter, nowhere near the gut they had before, really weird glam turn.   I think there is
whistling on one or two tracks and definitely some chanting. I used to picture The Black Keys ripping my face off with just their tambourines. I saw myself rushing to the ER for a Tetanus shot after their show explaining that I’d just been face flanked by a rusty ass cymbal, day dreaming of the sexy simple life paradox, but not so much anymore. Stale. This album kinda places me in a half empty concert bar surrounded by lonely consumer rate alternative rock jocks swaying back n forth to Auerbach’s bluesy, pansy hymns. Apparently Danger Mouse had a hand in this. I mean if Jenny from the block taught us anything, lets get fuckin loud. Shit you’re playing an electric guitar, toss the innocent chorus fails, and drive us home. Whatever. I mean I liked some of his dreamy ballads, but I just really hate the high pitch shtick when its with back up vocals. Aside from this one vision, opinion, I will listen to this album more than ten times. I really like She’s Long Gone, or I would have at least for their old sound, and I also think Sinster Kid really sucks hard and Howlin’ For You is a little leechy, like blues with a price tag.

Merging of The Seasons Future Posts Playlist

March 31, 2010 1 comment

This blog is currently undergoing some extensive merging into the future, and regenerating of the past. All posts are being re-organized, re-streamed, and re-linked to better fit WordPress, and improve visitor interaction. For example, I’ve added full album streams to most posts and I’m working on doing it for all of them, thanks to my editing class.

For now here is a preview of future posts:

Purple Image

Album: Purple Image
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Funk
Year: 1970
Label: Map
Who: Warren Adams, Kenneth Roberts, William Adams, Frank Smith, Del Moran, Richard Payne, Diane Dunlap
Where: Cleveland, OH

Purple Image, the cult followed psychedelic rock group released their one and only album on Map in 1970. One of the best album covers. Diane is out of this world! (my roommate just got dive bombed by an owl) This record is definitely worth the listen if your into the mind-bending dynamics of large psychedelic bands, male-female vocals, flying high, and touching the sky, insane sax, and/or you have a soul. Their most popular song Marching to a Different Drummer is a fifteen minute long masterpiece, roller coaster of soul funk and psych rock.

Track listing:1. Living in the Ghetto 2. Why 3. Lady 4. We Got to Pull Together 5. What You Do to Me 6. Marching to a Different Drummer
